I am giving a computer to a friend and he wants to keep a lot of my preferences, music, installed free software etc so I don't want to reinstall os x. However I would like to empty iCal of my entries for the past few years. I can't find anyway to do this other than individually deleting the entries which would take forever.

Is there a way anyone knows for mass deleting iCal entries or restoring 'factory defaults' ?

Many thanks

Open a Terminal window and run:

rm -r ~/Library/Application\ Support/iCal
rm ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iCal*

However, at the very least I'd suggest creating a new user account for him and deleting your old one.
