Delete button no longer closes open mail message

when I clicked the delete button on an email I ahd opened, it used to delete the message and close it automatically. Now, it deletes it just fine, but I have to go and manualyl close the message, which is a bit annoying to do each time. Anyone know if there is something I can do to resolve this?

What sort of Mac do you have, or more poignantly, what sort of keyboard? Using my iMac's standard Apple keyboard, DELETE simply closes the window, but FORWARD-DELETE (the other DELETE button under HELP) removes the email and closes the email window.
