I am looking to free up some HDD space. I notice that Itunes has its own music folder with what appears as duplicates of everything ive added.

Can i delete the original mp3 AFTER importing it into Itunes?

(to be more specific i plan to move all my ripped music to an external HDD)

Yes. If you use iTunes "Organize Library" everything is coppied to the same folder as the iTunes Library File, then you can do whatever you want with the originals.

I think i remember selecting that, but to be absolutely sure, how do i check ?

This might answer my question.

preferences->advanced

i notice there is a check box "Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to Library"
