Delete from the Trash

In order to make room on a 1 TB external HDD backup, I moved several of the oldest ones to the trash. Unfortunately, I am not able to delete these files from the trash and the system indicates that several of them are 'in use' and 'locked'. Can anyone advise how to get rid of these older ones in the trash? I am unable to move them back to the time machine and attempt deletion there.

Delete Trash

Thanks for the reply - Elsewhere a discussion shed some light on this issue and I was able to download an app called 'Trash it' and was able to remove the items.

The simplest method is to install and use Trash-It
