What will happen if I delete my iCloud account?

For example, it seems that I cannot edit my contacts on my 4S unless the "Contacts" option on iCloud is turned on. If I delete iCloud will I get the ability back? Will I loose my contacts.

Does delete remove my account from the cloud completely?

I just dont know why I need the cloud if I am syncing regularly with iTunes.
