Delete Optimized photos for Ipad

I chose to sync all my iphoto photos to my ipad and itunes started optimizing them to fit the ipad with the result that my hard disk became almost full. Where are these optimized photos stored/ how do i delete them?

This article hasn't been updated for the iPad but I assume the principle applies. If you have a Mac of course. On a Windows computer you'd need to look in your My Pictures or Pictures folder for the corresponding folder.
