Hi Guys,

I really would appreciate some help, as I am losing the will to live.

Currently, I have a MBP, iPhone XS and an iPad, with photos being shared to all devices via iCloud. However, I have decided to declutter all the photos on my iPhone, but keep all of them on my MBP.

I know it maybe a simple thing but the more I think the more it becomes a noodle scratcher :)

Any help would save my sanity.

Thanks in advance.

Because of how iCloud works (change on one device will be synced across all devices), you cannot achieve your goal using only photos app. Basically, you cannot use iCloud. You have to export the photos you want to declutter out of iCloud to a local location or to another cloud provider.

Turn on optimise iPhone storage under your iCloud photo settings.

This is because of the basic misunderstanding of iCloud “storage” that many people have. It’s not a “storage” method, it’s a sync method. It’s a way to sync photos (and whatever else) across all your devices, of particularly for cloud photo storage.

It’s always baffled me how people don’t seem to get this.

Take photos off iCloud and leave them on your MacBook Pro. Then use a cloud storage service (like Dropbox) to store your backup photos from your MacBook.

I am not sure if you can use iCloud Drive as a "regular external hard drive" and drag photos onto it without it syncing with the Photos app.
