I have a wonderful, shiny new MacBook which I love. But, for the life of me I cannot figure out how to delete a character in front of the cursor rather than behind the cursor in Microsoft Word. I'm very accustomed to doing this and would prefer to keep it up. Could anyone tell me how to do this?

many thanks!
