Deleting a partition on my HD

So I portioned my HD when I got my iMac. I want to delete the second partition which has never been used. Question is, is there any precautions I should take when doing this? Can I just go to disk utility and delete the partition and disk utility will merge the extra space with the 1st partition?

Yes you can. You're backed up, of course? In Disk Utility you can delete partitions and it will merge the space back to the remaining partition without affecting that data
