Deleting Mail app recent contacts

I have a iPad 1 and seem to have built up quite a collection of old email addresses that pop up when I am selecting recipients for a new email.
Does anyone know how I can delete all entries in this recents list?

I have removed all normal contacts temporarily from the iPad using the mail settings but the list still appears.

It was something that was added with iOS 6, so you are kind of stuck with them. The only way to remove them prior to iOS 6 was to restore as new.
