Deleting web history in "grey" area

When I put the curser (without typing anything) in the area to type a web address in Safari, 3 old sites I have visited show up in the gray area right below. It used to be 1, then 2, now 3. None of the sites are bookmarked. The following did not work:

Clearing history, cache, and cookies

Double tapping home and exiting Safari

Shutting down Ipad.

Doing the above on Iphone, connected to Ipad through Icloud.

Any ideas?
