iPod Deleting/working with songs on 3rd Gen Nano

I just loaded a new 3rd Gen Nano with my entire iTunes music library. Now I'd like to delete some of the material, but the software will not allow me to select the songs. Also, it will not let me change sort categories, or views.

Here's the steps I"m trying:

To remove a song, video, or other item from iPod nano:
1 In iTunes, select iPod nano in the source list.
2 Select a song or other item on iPod nano and press the Delete or Backspace key on your keyboard.

Is this a bug in 7.4.2, or am I doing something wrong?

More: I've found that by unchecking selections and re syncing I can effectively delete songs from the iPod, but no change in the category/view issue.

After I posted i realized that someone else had a better answer, but the forum won't allow you to cancel a post all together. That's why my post says "already answered".

Set up Playlists within iTunes. Then, set the iPod up to sync only selected playlists.

This allows you to keep the music checked in iTunes, but not loaded on your iPod. If you set up some smart playlists, the content of your iPod can change dynamically as the playlists are updated.
