I just loaded a new 3rd Gen Nano with my entire iTunes music library. Now I'd like to delete some of the material, but the software will not allow me to select the songs. Also, it will not let me change sort categories, or views. Is this a bug in 7.4.2, or am I doing something wrong?

iPod Deleting/working with songs on 3rd Gen Nano

How did you sync your iPod? Is it set to automatically sync the library? If so, then the iPod will grab everything from iTunes and set it up just like your library. To prevent something from being synced you could uncheck it's little box and then set the iPod to only sync checked songs.
