I have a Dell Inspirion 3567 w/ 128GB SSD, 8GB RAM, and Intel 7th Gen i3 that I got used on eBay for $300. I threw Linux Mint on it and it's a pretty good laptop. Functional and fairly aesthetic. The screen is just ok and the trackpad is ok but everything else is great. I would look for a higher end model but I mostly use a desktop. I've heard that Dell is the most compatible with Linux and they even ship some of their computers pre installed with Linux. I like HP and Asus hardware better but not sure how compatible they are. I guess it depends on the model.
