Picked up my iPhone last week and the store refused to process my trade in and said the only option was to do it by mail. Having read enough horror stories, I didn't want to do that. Is this a new policy or was it a lazy employee? Would I have success going back to the store and asking them again?

If you purchased the iPhone from the Apple site and chose trade in, then you will have to wait for the trade in box.

Same thing happened when I picked up mine on launch day - Apple rep refused to take the trade in and said to wait for the TIK box.

Tracked my trade in via FedEx and after 24 hours, got the full trade in credit.

When you purchased your iphone. Did you order with the trade in option online?

For me i purchased mine through apple.com for in-store pick up and i did not select the trade in. What i did is i picked up my phone at the apple store and next day i took my 16 pro max and traded it in the store and got the $700 credited to my bank account directly without issue.

I have never had an Apple Store deny me to trade in. I've even DONE the trade in box, AND then later decided to trade in store and they took it (albeit this was years ago).

I would go back to the store and ask again if it was me. I refuse to mail in my phone based with how I see they treat paying customers when **** hits the fan.

I purchased an iPhone 17 at my local Apple store and returned a few hours later to trade in my older iPhone. No problem at all and received my trade-in refund within minutes.

I was wondering if they'd let you do that. Cuz I would like to take the new phone home - transfer everything over on my fast wifi, THEN bring back the old phone for trade in. Interesting.

The Apple Store I went to said they couldn’t process it since it was setup as an online trade-in. They tried though went to the end, but wouldn’t let them. I took a picture of the amount offered and then sent it in. Received the same amount.

That must be something new - good to know. I know years ago in the past they let me do this. Not anymore.

FWIW, I just asked that question of Apple. I bought my 17 Pro on launch day and when I placed the order I selected trade in (there was no option for mail vs. in store). When I got to the store for pick up, I was able to trade in in store no problem and got the refund quickly.

A couple days later I got the box and simply recycled it. That was slightly confusing because there was NOTHING on the box or tracking that indicated it indeed WAS "the box". I had to assume it was because it was clearly designed to house a phone but it didn't say Apple anywhere.......

About a month later I started getting emails warning me that they had not received my phone yet so I called them. I was told that the store and online systems are "kinda separate" and not to worry about ignoring the box if I had already received the trade in credit (which I had).

When I asked if I simply missed the in-store trade option when I ordered the phone, they said NO, it doesn't exist. They went on to say that the way I did it was fine and that the only time I could NOT trade in at the store regardless of how I placed the order was if I had originally purchased the trade in phone from a carrier. In that case, you must mail it in and they forward it to the carrier for credit.

I had the opposite thing happen to me this week. I went to the Apple Store to oick up a new phone and asked for the box so i could set up the new phone at home and they told me that i had to do the trade-in in the store and leave the old phone with them. 🤷

Since the 12PM, I’ve been preordering through Apple and taking my trade-in to the Apple Store to be processed and never been turned away. This was the first year I did in store pick-up vs delivery, and I was told in my email that I would receive a trade-in kit and prepaid shipping label, but I still took my trade-in to the Apple Store and received the full amount. The process took about 5-10 minutes.

my guess is that not all stores accept physical trade ins.

ive cranked the math and after eBay fees you're still going to lose 10-15% on the trade in doing it with apple but the upside is that you can never get scammed. so in my book its worth it to do the physical trade in.

Ordered my 17PM from Apple, selected trade-in, received the box in the mail, then traded my old phone in at the store about a week later. They did ask if I had the box at home and I said yes, they said they would have to check if they could do the trade at the store and then quickly said no problem. I got the credit back to my card plus tax and was out of there quickly. I've done this exact same thing numerous times without a problem but this is the first time they hesitated a little before taking the trade.

Way to leave out the part where you chose online trade-in ha
He did a in-store pick-up which is the same thing I did, and I didn’t have a choice between mailing my trade-in or taking it into a physical store. In the email, Apple said they would mail me a trade-in kit, which I’m quite sure his email confirmation said the same thing.
