It needs to be free from iTunes and stand alone.

I've had so many conversations with people that are older and/or less tech savvy and they know about the iPad and are interested. When I tell them about it, they are uniformly super excited until I get to the part where they will need access to a PC/Mac running iTunes and they lose interest.

The iPad is perfect for these people that just want to Facebook, email and browse the web. They get the wifi part but it becomes too much trouble when iTunes comes up.

Activation/Updates over wifi and without iTunes would open up a lot of people that would love the iPad.
 
Probably, Apple is doing something (they understand for sure that iTunes really sucks, they are clever guys, aren't them?), first step should be iCloud, about which all are talking around - it will (again, probably) allow to store all content outside of iTunes library.
