I was wondering if anyone can suggest an easy to use in programe for illustration & design

skitch, seashore & sketchup come to mind. All, i believe are donationware.

Inkscape is a free Illustrator type app.
And
Gimpshop is a free Photoshop type app.

Both need X11 to be installed IIRC.
