I have a rather small desk, so if I were to set up a lamp, it would be pretty much right next to the iMac...

I'm wondering, though, would I run the risk of damaging the iMac in any way by having a heat source so close to the computer? The lamp takes a 25 watt bulb, max... no higher than that.

The space of my desk is comparable to the one shown in this picture:

Except, I don't have a second monitor and the iMac is centred in the desk, nearer to the back, with a good little bit of distance between iMac and keyboard/trackpad.

What do you guys think?

Hi,

Please choose from one of the following answers...

1. A 25watt bulb will do no damage to the Mac - None at all.

2. A 25watt bulb will melt down a Mac in a matter of seconds. I won't even have them in the house for that very reason.

3. A 25watt bulb is. Thats it - A 25watt bulb simply is!

Regards.

It will be fine if you are really concerned you could use an led. Hell I have 3 50watt halogens above my macbook air and nothing is wrong with it. :)

Sorry but I can't believe this question! The melting point of aluminium is 660.37 C - unlikely a 25W bulb is going to reach this! :)

Okay, that's the aluminum, but what about the screen?

You're really saying I have nothing to worry about by putting a 25 watt lamp pretty much directly next to my iMac?

I think youre just overreacting. 25watt of efficient bulb produce very little heat. And no way it's gonna melt chassis, lcd or even your hair :p

And if that bulb is really hot, iMac still sucking cold air from the bottom and dissipates into top vent. So please stop worrying too much and turn on the damn bulb already :p

If that light can melt the iMac or cause damage it,,,,,i think you have more issues to worry about maybe about harming you physically....

I have an iMac at the office in front of a large window and if anything that would cause more damage than anything and have not noticed any damage not that I expected there should be....

youre fine. fyi.
