Problem solved! I did not have this problem until I received a notice from Apple for an update.
When I downloaded the update my Icons went grey. The problem was that the download never loaded properly. When I received my next update all the problems were gone. If this happens to you should contact Apple and request them to push the latest update to you again.

1. Could you provide some context as to what the original issue was?
2. Change the title of the post to something like "FIXED: [original title]" and then add the "Resolved" prefix, just so we all know that the problem is solved.

The original issue was that the desk top icons on the Safari start page were gray. That is the context! I then stated that the Problem was solved which is the same as Resolved? Are you confused?

I'm confused. Safari doesn't have a desktop. Do you mean the favorites on your start page? I know it's just terminology, but words mean things. When you say gray, I see them as icons that have had the color removed. But you don't mean that, do you? You mean the icons went away and were displayed as gray proxy icons?

Yes the favorites icons on the start page. And yes the color was removed so they were all grey. Meaning no color other than grey. The icons were still there with names but entirely gray with no other color. I had 84 icons that were all grey.
