Hi all,
Sorry if i am covering old ground here,this is just my story of my 1st mac experience.
I am new here and being retired living in Thailand i play around with laptops just as a hobby.I have just bought a very old[2008] macbook a1181,badly damaged with broken screen,no hhd,owner said it wont load osx,many scratches ,chips,cracks on casings ect ,very poor puppy.So i thought i would buy this broken and untested little laptop to see if i could do something with it,and this was my first mac purchase [excited].
So it arrived, [my god] a very sad mac indeed,i had no charger,no magsafe connector and the battery was u/s,
i first looked at the screen,it was intact but i could see diagonal lines and a serious burn mark or something inside the glass[not good].Next i checked out the RAM modules,2 of them 2GB each and intact.Then the hdd area,yep no cradle for the drive,so really beyond repair[NO WAY].i decided to order a universal power supply and a magsafe connector and i had a new spare 100gb hdd.I was 110% sure i would try to turn this mac into a working deskbook,never to replace the screen.I read up on removing the screen [easy enough] but to completley remove the display cable that was more difficult,having to remove and disconnect many items before i could remove the cable.As i was not replacing the screen i decided to cut the cable at the screen and
removed the connector from the logic board,i then cut the connector from the cable and tucked away thecable end,rather than risk damaging something else doing it the proper way,i also removed the microphone cable too.I cut the 2 antenna wires from the screen frame and letthem hang loose out of the clutch cover housing.
I used a hdd cradle from an old dell d400 which fitted perfectly.Ichecked and cleaned all the inside of the lappy and checked the fan condition,then i put it back together without the entire display.I hooked up the d/c
and connected the magsafe,fingers crossed i powered it up,and it came on chime and no audible or flashing S.I.L light.I bought a yosemite 10.10 osx dvd and loaded the system,the dvd was still working, using a mini dvi to hdmi adaptor to our t.v.Everything is working and it is faster than my 2015 acers 1.90ghz having a 2.1ghz processor.I removed the batteries from the case for cosmetic and safety purposes.The casings i repaired and made good with sandpaper and super glue.
MAC=£14
DVI-HDMI £2.00
MAGSAFE £3.00
D/C CHARGER £5.00
MISC ITEMS £3.00
S/H 15" MONITOR £8.00
£33 got me a good working 2008 macbook still working good.
I was lucky but the enjoyment is doing it yourself,this little mac would probably have ended up in the bin.
