so about every 9 out of 10 restarts my desktop background is smaller and in the corner like this. it doesn't matter what the screen resolution is or what the background image is (stock desktop backgrounds do it as well)

all of the following will correct it: log out and in, create new desktop space, turn monitor on and off, change screen resolution

it's not the end of the world but pretty annoying

any help, opinions, ideas appreciated

Is that an external monitor we're speaking of?
Also, in advance, resetting NVRAM might help with problems like that. The process depends on the Mac model you've got. Check the Apple's instructions: link

yes it’s external monitor

i’ve already reset nvram

Which Mac, what monitor and how it's connected would be good info.

hackintosh with i9 9900k and 5700xt connected to LG 27UD68-W 4k 27” monitor via display port

started happening with 11.1

My hackintosh on Mojave does that…at least I see it when I boot from the clone I have on a slow, mechanical hard drive.

are you saying an identical install does it from one disk but not another on the same machine?

Yes…but one is an SSD and the other (clone) a mechanical HD. The startup time is a LOT slower on the clone and I think that everything happens so quickly on the SSD that the full screen has established itself before the screen fades in. Probably just a startup stage thing with graphics drivers and hackintosh.

I don't worry about it.

that theory makes sense

i’m already booting from pcie nvme though. i wonder if the number of disks i have attached is slowing down part of the boot process where this is happening

i shouldn’t worry about it but unsolved puzzles can drive me a little mad

Could be the disks. I have four SSDs and two mechanical HDs in my tower as well as an always on mechanical HD via USB.

With the arrival of Apple Silicon processors we'll all be jumping the hackintosh ship, sooner or later, it seems.
