Desktop changing problems

I installed Leopard fine but when I go in to System preference then to desktop and screensaver. I can change the screensaver but when I click on desktop the program freezes. I have to "apple Q" out of the program. I have re started the MacBook Pro twice and I have let it sit for 2 hours and still nothing. Anyone have any ideas as to what the problem is? I have a MacBookPro 2.4GHz
