Desktop icon color

Question please:

I have a late 2011 13" MacBook Pro - OS X 10.8.2. I have been using a separate USB drive for TimeMachine. All works great.

However, from time to time when I hook up the external drive I see the icon that appears on my desktop show up in an orange color. Normally it shows as a dark teal color.

Is there a significant difference between the two colors?

The orange icon colour is reserved for external HDDs either using USB or Firewire, thus they also have a USB or Firewire symbol in them. If it gets dark green, it is a Time Machine HDD.
Your Mac probably takes a while to recognise it as TM HDD, thus the discrepancy.

I've noticed that too. Typically external hard drives in OSX show up with an orange icon. A drive used for Time Machine typically shows up as a blue color, with the clock and arrow logo on it.

I don't think it's anything to worry about.
