Desktop icons disappear (refresh)

Am running system 10.4.11 on a G5. Desktop icons disappear (desktop refreshes) every 5 or so minutes. And when it does, whatever I'm writing (for instance, this message) stops momentarily.

The only thing I've added is the recent security update.

Any thoughts about this, and solutions, would be much appreciated.

Could be the Quicktime update. Check if you have Stuffit AVR in System Preferences. If so, find some button in there that says Stop. Should make the problem go away.
