The finder works, and the desktop background is fine.
But for some reason the desktop icons have disappeared.
The files and directories on the desktop are there in finder's file listing.
But they don't show on the desktop.
Any suggestions?

Have you tried relaunching finder? Or *shudder* rebooting?

I've been experiencing this on two machines, icons not on the desktop, but they're listed in Desktop in the finder. Also icons don't appear in the dock when the app is launched or running.
only a minor inconvenience for me, as I figured it out pretty quickly, but if it was on my Mum's machine she'd be lost.

killall Dock or
killall Finder resolves it but I shouldn't need to do this.

Also!

You could check the settings of programs like - Onyx, TinkerTool

I had accidentally checked "Disable Desktop Features" in TinkerTool, that was my problem.

:apple:

Brute force fix..

From shell issue:

defaults write com.apple.finder CreateDesktop -bool true; killall Finder

yep, this is a bug/ issue that has annoyed the hell out of me with leopard.

icons disappear on the desktop and they reappear again if you restart finder.

i so hope this is another thing they fix in 10.5.5

I have 10.5.5, and this just happened to me for the first time. I do not think it is directly related to the update, though, because I had all my icons for the past few days.

They haven't fixed the bug where Leopard "forgets" the display's color profile, either.
