Desktop Icons scatter when system crashes

I have a Mac Pro and Lion.... I have several dozen icons on my desktop that I organize in a specific order. Whenever my system crashes, all the icons scatter to one side of the desktop. How can I lock them in place? Appreciate any help you wonderful folks can offer. Peace, Joe Ray
