Desktop items vanished!

Upgraded to Catalina the day after it was released, and today I saw that all of my desktop items have disappeared. Is there a way to recover them? (I don't use Time Machine, alas.)
 
Solved! Ticked Desktop and Documents in iCloud Drive. Everything's back to being visible.
