Desktop picture not "stretching" to fit screen

I was the one with the enlarged items on my desktop of my imac G4 10.3. I switched the resolution around in the system preferences which got my items back to size...only now I can't get my desktop picture, the one that I use for the background, to stretch to fill the screen even though it is checked under the "personal" section of the preferences. So the screen is small with a black border around my picture. Please advise me.
