Desktop wallpaper problem

In my system preferences/Desktop and Screen Saver, I have a "Folders" icon, which when expanded shows "Desktop" - this folder appears to have some pictures which I had on my desktop, but that I have since removed - they are not on my desktop

However, if I click on any one of these photos, the desktop changes to that photo.

Can anyone tell me where are these photos stored, as I would like to delete them? I have already looked in Macintosh HD/Library/Desktop Pictures
