I recently had this back cover issue on my 1st gen SS Apple Watch. Surprisingly the new replacement they sent me was a SS series 2! I thought it was a mistake when my work authorization email states the replacement says series 2, to my surprise a real series 2 came (edited out personal info, serial numbers, and employee, case number info)

maybe because this issue is recurring for replacement watches enough that decided to start issuing series 2?

Wow, that is very cool! Service like this keeps me coming back to Apple even if their products are a bit more expensive. Thanks for sharing!

Apple does this periodically: issuing field replacement units that are better than the original simply because they have run out of replacement stock of the original device.

It's nice that Apple treated you this way, but by no means is it the first time.

And by no means should any reading this get this into their head whereas they feel that they are entitled to an upgrade.

It happened to this particular person and there is no promise that it will happen to anyone else.

Apple has been known to do this before, where they will replace your unit with a newer one over the previous unit that you owned. It's possible that if they don't have a certain amount of a replacement units, they issue an upgraded unit. Other members have had their first generation Apple Watches replaced by Series one.
