I've tried searching for this on the forums and elsewhere, but couldn't find it either because I didn't use the correct combination of search terms or it hasn't been answered yet.

My iPhone 3G will automatically detect and join a Wi-Fi network when possible, and the status indicator at the top of the screen indicates when it does (the cell network icon, whether it be GPRS, EDGE, or 3G, is replaced by the Wi-Fi icon). Of course, when connected to a Wi-Fi network, all my data (e-mail, web browsing, etc.) will be transmitted and received through the Wi-Fi network while all voice calls (I'm not using VoIP) go through the cellular network.

I live in an area of decent EDGE coverage but on the fringe of 3G coverage.

How can I tell which type of cellular technology is being used (3G or EDGE) when my iPhone 3G is connected to a Wi-Fi network (without manually turning Wi-Fi off)?
