Devanagari: how to make it work?

Hi,

I've got Devanagari in my fonts and it show up in Font Book (although not font explorer X) and I can see all the glyphs. I've got Devanagari selected in System Prefs>International. However it is not in my list of fonts in Appleworks. It is in my list of fonts for Text Edit but it doesn't show up as Devanagari just odd characters.

Is there some way to make it work?
