Hello all.

Hope you’re well.

I’ve been on quite a spending spree of late, and have bought many Apple devices:

AirPods Pro.
Apple Watch 8 (SS.)
New Apple TV.
iPhone 14 Pro Max (Gold.)
MagSafe Wallet (Midnight.)
M2 MacBook Air (Starlight.)
M2 MacBook Pro (Silver.)

To be fair, I wanted to upgrade my 12 Pro Max, and I had no computer (other than my 2018 iPad Pro) so those purchases can be “valid.”

However, now I feel like some of the devices kind of remove the need for others. Does this make any sense to you, or am I talking crap?

Example: No longer need AOD of my iPhone, as I can tell the time with my Apple Watch.

No need to constantly check my new iPhone, as notifications appear on my watch.

Loved watching ATV+ on my MacBook Air over Christmas, but now I don’t need to, as I can watch it on my ATV on my big screen.

Have any of you felt like this?

Hoping I don’t get any snarky responses; I’m just wondering if anyone else feels the same? Or maybe you can give me a different perspective?

Anyway, take care everyone.

I currently own/use daily

Apple Watch S6
iPhone 14 Pro
iPad Pro 12.9 (2020)
Apple to 4K (2022)
iMac 27” 5k

I understand your thoughts regard overlap, but i find each overlap has its place in my world.

Example. I can receive notifications on my watch, but often easier to view via AOD on iPhone if driving or in meetings |(with phone mounted in VLOS). Other times, i may not want to take phone out of pocket, and the Apple Watch comes into its own.

With ATV+, I am able to watch on living room TV, iMac (if living room is used by others and i want to watch something different) and iPad if I’m away (often am with work).

Each device has it’s place, you just have to find the balance of them in your world.

I have the Apple MagSafe wallet and really like it. Recommend the 2nd Gen variant as it has NFC built in for ‘Find My’.

Many thanks for the advice.

Wishing you well.

I have a

- iMac
- MBP
- iPad Pro
- Watch
- iPhone
- AirPods
- Windows laptops
- Android smartphones
- OLED 4K TV
- Echo Dot
- UE Megaboom 2
- Amazon Smart Wall Clock
- SNES mini
- Commodore 64 mini
- Playstation mini
- Sony AV receiver

If I were to go down to basics I'd just keep

- Mac
- iPhone

The Watch, OLED 4K TV, iPad & AirPods are just quality of life improvements.

UE Megaboom 2, Amazon Smart Wall Clock, Echo Dot, Windows laptops & Android smartphones were stinkers.

Money is better spent on non-tech expenses like assets that create multiple streams of passive income.

Excluding the iPhones I would only replace my devices after the final Security Update. The replacement would be a year model after that final Security Update.

So every 8-10 years assuming use case hardly ever changes. Like say my last use case change was buying a 2015 Canon EOS 5Ds R 51 megapixel dSLR. My 2012 iMac 27" 22nm easily handles it so I'm only replacing it in 2023 once a 27" iMac 27" replacement comes out. Sadly its a 5nm chip and not a 4nm or even 3nm chip.

Would have been rad to move from a 22nm chip to a 3nm chip. lol

Like you, I think if I had to choose just a couple of devices, it would be one of my Macs & my iPhone.

I forgot I had AirPods Pro, so just added them to my list.

I suppose it's nice to have options, right?

Mind you I meant a singular Mac and not an iMac + MBP. But if i do have both I'd buy them this way

- 2015 iMac to 2025 iMac
- 2020 MBP to 2030 MBP

Although I keep the device for a decade my upgrade cycle is every 5 years to enjoy quality of life improvements.

I added an Echo Dot smart speaker to the list with a Smart wall clock. The Echo Dot is redudant to my Mac, iPhone and especially my iPad's speakers. The Smart wall clock is a lazy person's way of keeping accurate Internet time on a wall clock.

Watching those YouTuber reviews, https://camelcamelcamel.com/ and https://slickdeals.net/ just induced me to buy crap I did not need.

When pushed I'd choose a Mac that fits into my work/home life. If I'm >80% work from home I'd stick with the iMac.

iPhone would be replaced every 2 years for

- fresh battery
- die shrink
- business expense
- wear & tear
- better camera
- preventive maintenance

Options are nice but it does add clutter and complications that may eat into time for other priorities.

Again, money could be spent elsewhere that adds to multiple streams of income.

Excluding the iPhone my purchases from 2013-2020 were a waste of money. Smarter move was to keep the 2012 iMac 22nm & 2011 MBP 32nm then replace them with a 2021 MBP 16" M1 Pro 5nm & a 2023 iMac 27" 5nm.

I read a market survey about TV purchases. It is generally done by married couples and not single adults. Single adults tend to prefer smaller screens like those of a desktop, laptop, tablet, smartphone and the like. TVs tend to be kept 2-3 decades until it breaks down or a bump in streaming/video resolution. Like I bought into a 1080p TV when 2K blu-rays were introduced in 2006. Bought into a 4K TV when 4K blu-rays and Netflix/Prime/YouTube 4K streaming became a thing in 2016.

2026 is a big question mark if 8K resolution video will be a thing or will it be delayed by a decade or so.

I just ordered the MagSafe Wallet.

Went for Midnight (my iPhone is gold, so it will compliment it nicely.)

I can still use the MagSafe Wallet with my MagSafe clear case, right?

And I only need it to hold two cards & my driving license. I believe three cards is what it holds comfortably, is that right?

Thanks.

I also have an Echo Dot, with clock.

However, since Amazon made the ridiculous decision to shuffle all playlists, it is now reduced to a clock radio!

There's no way I'm paying Amazon for music, when I'm already a Prime subscriber.

I think they will revert back to the way it was, before much longer.

My Echo Dot just plays podcasts... before my ex-gf encouraged me to buy one my iPad/Mac/iPhone played audio just fine.

There is just too much redundancies and overlaps that makes you question.... why... did... I... buy...these... e-waste?

My brother bought smart LED lights. I get the novelty of changing colors and such but the lumens per watt ratings of these things is way below 223lm/W. A better value would be very high Color Rendering Index (CRI) LED lamps so colors would be vibrantly complete rather than dully incomplete.

Don't get me started with AirPods... audio quality's worse because Bluetooth is lossy... i need to charge them and you would freak out if 1 of the AirPods gets lost. This is unlike my el cheapo Xiaomi wired Pistons that cost me $5 to buy with shipping.

HaHa!

I actually really liked my Echo Dot, until Amazon brought in the ridiculous shuffle "feature."

Never have I felt a company be so desperate to force people to upgrade.

I used to pay for Prime but put a stop to it as I don't buy much of anything from Amazon anymore as I moved to a different country that they do not make domestic deliveries to.

So the Echo Dot's usefulness diminishes further.

Even when I paid for Prime I never used its music streaming service as I generally do not listen to music.

When I am driving I prefer to listen to a podcast or the sound of the engine.

Planet Money and How I Built this gets me entertained during the commute to/from work.

If I could do a dover I'd have never bought those junk and saved myself >$10k. With that money I could have bought shares that would have given me an annual dividend of >$7k.

Oh yeah... my ex gifted an UE Megaboom 2... I honest wish I given cash or no gift at all.

Another regretful purchase is buying multi USB port fast chargers.

I think I bought half a dozen of them when all I need was 1.

I do not need it to be a fast charger as I slow charge my devices to reduce battery wear and tear.

Only time a fast charger is useful for my use case would be in a car where in I want a 0-50% charge within 30 mins drive in case I forgot. Drive longer and you get to 100%. Just have enough ports to accommodate at least 2 smartphones as you have a the built-in USB port of the car for slow charging/CarPlay.

At home you can slow charge over an 8 hour period while you sleep.

Tuesday I tried to set someone up with their own cable modem and router
I need an overlap of 3 separate MacBooks, ElCap ran the router software, Mojave upgraded that and Ventura configured the router.

My most used  product this morning was the G4 iTouch while the watch recorded a walk (behind a lawn mower)
this MacBook Air 2020 is typing and playing Journey music to a JBL go BT speaker while im trying to say cool in a humid outdoor Aera. my MacBook Pro would be swirling now while mt HomePods are waiting with my 2022tv to present my spoiled butt with the EPL match for later this PM in a ceiling fan room.

yes I miss the use of my 2010 MacBook Air but we have to do what we need to entertain ourselves.
why not?

Thank you for your feedback.

I received my MagSafe Wallet earlier today. I got the Midnight colour, which pairs well with my Gold iPhone.

Quite like it, thus far. Haven’t been able to see if I can get my two debits cards, and driving license in it, as I’m not at home. Hoping so, though.

I like that Find My alerts me, just a minute after detach. I watched a review, where the fella said it was an hour! That wouldn’t be much use.

Thanks again.

I'm the last one to ask about device overlap. Okay, maybe not the last one, but close enough.

In my house there are (roughly) 12 active computers and the majority of those are mine. By active, I mean on and functioning. I have a 24-port switch. If most people even know what a hub or switch IS, then maybe they own at most a 4 port hub.

This does not account for the other fully functioning computers laying around that are off. I am also not counting work issued computers.

On top of that, my house has six active phones. By active, meaning cellular service. This does not include several other fully functioning phones that use WiFi only. There are two iPads, both of which have cellular.

We have a multitude of clocks (most of them my wife's). Some of the previously mentioned phones are used as clocks.

Do I get rid of all the clocks because my phones and my computers can tell time?

What about getting rid of the computers and phones because we have clocks?

My phones can make phone calls - so can my computers. Which one do I get rid of?

There's always going to be device overlap. But some devices are built to be mobile and some are not, and some have additional purposes that the others don't. Both my phone and my computer can make phone calls. But, I use my phone as a phone, because I have computers that handle the stuff a lot of people use their phones for.

As long as you feel you have a purpose to use something, then do. It's your money and if it makes you happy you don't have to justify owning it to anybody.

Would you say you have a bit of a problem (joking aside)?

Do you have 6 wives? My dad got himself a 2nd iPhone on the same telco and I asked him if he had his 3rd wife. 🤣

When I got my hand me down 1996 Nokia 2110 in 1998 I stopped wearing my Swatch watch that I've been using for a decade prior. Many people had a cow over it because... I looked like a poor boy without a man jewelry. I look at it as making me look less of a target for a mugger.

If I was only smarter I'd have sold all replaced devices immediately to my relatives or subordinates at an amortized rate over 12 months. More money liberated to pay off my telco's iPhone plan.

No, LOL! :D

I'm not using all this stuff at once, but it all has it's purpose. I have a Mac Mini for instance that serves as the default location for all downloads (from all the other computers). One primary phone, one secondary phone and the rest mainly get used as iPods.

My wife carries a second phone for work purposes. She doesn't want the people she interacts with to have her personal number.

This is not to say I don't have plans to be getting rid of some of this stuff.

No, just the one wife. :D

That said, the same could be said to my wife in regards to her purses! She has one purse for a specific purpose that goes with a certain outfit when doing a certain thing…on and on.

She eventually figured out that all my tech devices is the same thing to me. :D

Yes, she's a wonderful person (I mean that, she really is).

We talked a lot before we got married. Some things have changed over the years, most of it due to circumstance and plans meeting reality. But she's been great through it all. At some point a significant part of the front room was ceded by her to me for computers.

I'm looking forward to when the last kid moves out because as nice as this is, my stuff in is the main common room. But the deal is that she gets back the first unoccupied room (because she gave it up first) - so I have to wait on the youngest before I get to move all my tech stuff (and she gets the entire front room back).

I have some level of overlap,
I have:
M1 iPad Pro (13")
iPad Mini
iPhone 13 Pro
M1 14" MBP
Apple Watch (I forget what series)

My watch has an AOD, which I disabled, I find I use my iPad mini more then the iPad Pro, and most of all, I use my iPhone. My MBP gets used for home use, rarely does it travel with me.

From your list, the only "overlap" imo are just the laptops. I mean unless you use both laptops all the time, you can probably go with just one. The rest are have their own function that cannot be replicated.
