I had set up my iPhone from a backup and read about starting as a new phone would help the battery life. From the settings menu I erased the phone and set it up as a new phone. Should this give me the same results regarding the battery as if I started as a new phone from DFU mode? Thanks!

Should give you the same results but I still do a DFU restore anyway to make sure everything working fine. One iPhone 5 I've found a picture taken at the factory, QA picture.

Heard stories about people trying to do DFU and for some reason the phone bricks, but that's usually because of jail breaking or liquid related damage

FYI, battery calibration, discharge it til it turns off and fully charge it
