Hi all

So with quad core options now finally available in the 13” chassis, something which a few years ago couldn’t be imagined, could we soon see dGPUs entering the 13” MBP?

I ask as Huawei have an amazing 13” laptop, the same size and weight as the 13” MBP, with a dGPU and quad core cpu. Furthermore, battery life has remained pretty similar to what the MBP achieves

Thanks

Why couldn't quad cores be imagined? You could say 6 cores couldn't be imagined on a 15" too - but I don't see the relevance of dGPU's and CPU cores...

Anyway, I'd rather we moved away from dGPU's and had decent iGPU's (Iris Pro GT3e/GT4e) for both 13" and 15" and moved towards external eGPU's as the answer. The bodies of laptops of these class I think are already at their limits to cool these CPU's, adding a dGPU is just asking for trouble.

Just looking at the 2018 15", without a dGPU, they could use the extra space to increase battery and cooling capacity. Unfortunately, Intel are not dealing a good hand with the lack of good iGPU's for the 15" models.

People were clamoring for quad core computers in a 13" form factor for years, I think it wasn't beyond the realm of belief or imagination.

Apple could design a 13" laptop now with a dGPU, they chose not too, there's no technical reasons preventing them from using a dGPU in a 13" laptop. Back in the day they actually used discrete GPUs in the 13" laptop

I agree it is a conscious decision not a technical one... and I see them getting further away from that now that there are eGPUs. Battery life while running a dGPU is a joke.

My opinion only, but I don't think we're going to see discrete GPUs on 13" MacBooks in the future... "pro" or not ...
