I recently picked up a cheap 2012 MacBook Pro that has a faulty screen. I bought it in the hopes of a backup laptop for writing or to donate to my sister. I haven’t been able to properly diagnose the problem but I want to see if it’s worth investing in a new display assembly. Otherwise keep it as a headless Mac or just sell it on. Any touch to the display assembly connector on the logic board makes the signal cut in and out. If the hinge is opened at just the right angle it will come on (the backlight is still on so it’s just the video signal). When the display is “working”, there are sometimes green patches and pink patches on anything rendering white (see image).

The other thing is, the screen itself is physically out of it’s case. The glass has lifted out as if it wasn’t glued properly. There’s no external damage so I wonder if someone tried to replace the glass on the screen and messed up the display cable.

Has anyone seen anything like this before? I’ve tried searching bit can’t find much for these symptoms. Is it worth buying a a new display assembly and testing it out? Unfortunately I don’t have a mini-dvi adapter to see if it’s a logic board graphics issue.

Well, after fiddling and twisting with the display data cable too much I must’ve broke it. Now the screen doesn’t power at all. Hopefully it’s the display cable that was the problem and I can find a cheap old screen to replace it with.

For anyone's future reference, I fixed it by cleaning the connectors and plugging back in again!
