Okay so when I boot my MBP into 64 bit mode I cannot connect to my dialup network, here are the messages that I get-
THe first one shows up when I first plug the USB into the computer...
and the second one shows up when I try to connect.

Am I the only one who thinks "dial-up" and "64 bit" in the same sentence sounds funny?

You've done the ususal - rebooted into 32, reset pram, run Disk Utility? Does the modem show up in system configuration?
 
The reason is that not all drivers have a 64bit counter-part so your modem does not have a 64bit driver and when you boot up in 64bit mode you lose access to any hardware that does not have the appropriate driver.

People seem fixated on booting up 64bit kernel when in reality, there's little benefit at this stage.
