Apps need the OS to allow access to the microphone. With Word 365 you can do this because there is an icon. Once you click it it says the OS needs to be allowed access. No problem. With excel there is no icon to click. You also used to be able to go into settings under privacy and click the + button and add whatever app needed access. With Ventura they took that ability out.

Apple has no clue what to do and wants to blame Microsoft. This is not a Microsoft issue. Anybody know how to force the Mac to allow Excel access to the microphone.

BTW it does not work on Notes either which shows this is NOT a Microsoft issue.

ETA: OK I figured a workaround in excel and any other app without a dictation icon. You need to disable dictate and then disable Siri. You then reboot and enable dictates BUT NOT Siri and you can now dictate in Excel. There is still a bug that initially whatever you dictate comes up as "aa". If you then remain in the cell and repeat what you said it actually then transcribes what you said. What a dumpster fire of an OS.

The "Start Dictation" option is under the Edit menu in Notes & Excel... both work perfectly for me, with no workarounds such as you mention.

The Microphone icon in Word is there because it activates Office's own dictation engine (which requires Microphone access), it's missing from Excel as I guess Microsoft think that no one wants to dictate in Excel.

As @MacGizmo says, the "Start Dictation" option under the Edit Menu works everywhere as it's the native macOS dictation engine (no microphone permissions needed). In Excel, double-click the cell to enable text input and dictation works correctly.

It did not work when I did this. Only until I did the fix I posted above did it work. Need it is under the edit menu for both applications it just did not work when you activated it. BTW it did not work on a MacBook Air or a Mac mini.
