I've tried it and it is as slow as QT Pro. Stick with ffmpegX and use the PSP preset, use best bit rate and resize to 320x240. It plays beautifully on my iPod.

yeah, well... I know that the PSP encoding works on the iPod but I am far more into the tv-playback and then the mp4- encoding (230400) is the way to go!

is it as slow?? bummer...
