I got my 14 Pro Max yesterday and started setting up all my apps. Clean install.

I went into the Instagram camera and saw this.

It asked for my permission to the camera and I approved.

Immediately after approving, I realized I didn’t have the update on my iPhone to ensure the camera doesn’t shake. This screen was up.

I panicked and held down the restart/reset buttons and my phone restarted.

1. Am I at risk of damaging the camera? Or am I safe since the camera hadn’t taken over yet? I don’t recall hearing any shaking.

2. I installed the iPhone update, but notice when I open the Instagram camera I hear a little click. Is that normal?

I’m just trying to see if I damaged my new iPhone. Any advice would be appreciated!

No you are fine.

Don’t panic if you hear a click when you open the camera on the Apple photo app. Supposedly that is the camera trying to focus on your ear that you have pressed up against the camera module at zero focal distance. Also don’t freak out if you hear static from the module when turned on. Normal and also happens on high end Samsung phones.

I thought it was a hardware issue but it looks like a software issue. That is when I bought my Pro Max. As long as the thing didn’t do the “funky chicken” on a third party app you are fine!

Oh, I also hear a click on my two year old 12 Pro Max but never put my ear up to it! 🤣

1. No, you should be fine. It won't damage the camera.

2. I don't hear a click on mine.

Thanks for the feedback.

It doesn’t happen all the time, but sometimes when opening the Instagram camera I can hear a click…and this is while using the iPhone normally, not with my ear up to it.

It’s a quick click and only happens randomly (not all the time). I didn’t have that crazy rattling that I saw in certain videos, but just wanted to make sure I didn’t damage anything.

Trust me, I was the one saying it was a hardware issue in the beginning. Then you hear people about other high end phones by other manufactures talking about the same thing and nothing ever came of it. Then I heard the click on my old 12 Pro Max and said “that’s it” its software and bought my new phone.

Funny - I can hear a very faint click opening on my 13 Pro Max…but the 14 Pro Max is definitely a louder click.

Bigger sensor?

At the end of the day all those three lens Apple Pro phones (at least 12 and up) seem to do it and no mass recalls so may as well forget about it. The Ultras seem to do act the same way if your radar is up for this stuff.

I have the same click problem when opening main camera in instagram in my iPhone 14 pro. Never had that shacking problem with instagram but that click sound is wierd. Is it apple working on a new software update for that problem? Or they thinks everything is solved with iOS 16.02. I was afraid thinking it was a hardware problem
