Did I just permanently lose all my sent email?

My Ipad 2 had a very old OS

I wanted to update to the newest OS

I plugged it into itunes on my laptop an it asked if i wanted to backup and then update.

it said it wouldn't restore downloaded media - ok with me

i said yes.

after all was done, everything was restored except downloaded movies etc.

but.., there is no "sent" folder in email.

i sent a message, and now there is a sent folder, with one message.

are all my sent messages lost?

did it warn me this would happen, and did i somehow miss the warning? (i don't think so)

are they in the backup on my PC somewhere?
