Maybe I stepped out of the room when they talked about it and missed it

Exactly my reaction after the keynote. Just heard support for Spatial Audio is coming to tvOS, which is good 👍🏻

Yep Spatial Audio and some HomeKit improvement on tvOS but no proper tvOS update. I am happy with Spatial Audio and wasn’t expecting a major tvOS update anyway so it’s fine with me

Did I miss something or were there no appletv updates? Like at all?

Not much.
  • Support for Spatial Audio with AirPods Pro and AirPods Max
  • Lossless audio (coming later this year)
  • HomePod mini can be used as speakers for the Apple TV
  • “Hey Siri” can be used to play content on the TV
  • A new “shared with you” section in the TV app displays content previously shared with the user
“SharePlay” for group viewing movies.

Not a new feature since other services have been doing it for a while. But (along with FaceTime links and FaceID Mask Unlock) its notable because its yet another feature Apple sat on rather than releasing it during the heights of the pandemic when more people actually would have used it.

Having recently purchased both a pair of HomePod minis and AirPods Max, today’s announcement for tvOS is all I have been waiting for, particularly the Spatial Audio for the Max.

This would've been so HUGE last year. Apple dropped the ball on this.

Is spatial audio only for the gen 2 apple tv 4k?

I am assuming since it only works on M1 macs, and thus that it must use the "Neural Engine" for processing.

SharePlay: Watch movies or shows with anyone, anywhere with SharePlay. Just start a FaceTime call on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac, then add Apple TV to share the viewing experience on the big screen. Everyone’s playback is coordinated — so you and your friends can laugh, cry, scream, or sigh at the same time.

For All of You: Browse a new row in the Apple TV app to find something that everyone in the house can’t wait to watch.

Shared with You: Movies and shows shared through Messages appear in a new row in the Apple TV app.

Spatial audio: Listen with AirPods Pro or AirPods Max for a theater-like experience with sound that surrounds you.

Smart AirPods routing: Get an automatic onscreen notification to magically connect your AirPods.

HomeKit camera enhancements: View multiple cameras around the house at the same time on your Apple TV.
Room-filling stereo sound: Pair two HomePod mini speakers with Apple TV 4K and enjoy rich, balanced sound for everything you watch.

What's unknown are whether Apple intends to bring Siri on-device processing with offline support to tvOS (Apple only mentions iPhone and iPad with A12 or better, so HomePod/HomePod mini is probably definite out). I am also hoping HDMI 2.1 features support (e.g., ALLM, QMS, VRR) are also forthcoming, but I am not holding my breath.

A lot like the mask update to open your iPhone with Apple Watch. Came out 1 day before I was vaccinated.
Because developing these features and hooking into an operating system used by billions is an easy task. 🙄
