My brand new uMBP 5,4 got a new seagate momentus 500gb 7,200 rpm HDD put in, and I think it just beeped. It sure sounded like it. Is this bad, or even possible?

help.
thanks

I'm not sure if Apple hardware (like PCs) have that little beeping hardware thing, and I'm pretty sure that Apple would not make their pristine OS make such a primitive sound. You probably heard the hard drive head engaging, and if the drive is new, then the metallic clink will be more pronounced.

EDIT *uMBP 5,3 not 5,4*
thought I would fix that.

And it was a pretty distinct computer beep, coming from the corner of the laptop where the hard drive is. It sounded like the beep a PC motherboard would make when it was angry.

Yes, they do beep. They also make other noises without provocation. Mine actually farted the other day.

Have you checked software update for any firmware or harddrive updates?

If I recall correctly, some of the Seagate 500GB's had a built in motion sensor that conflicted with Apple's motion sensor.
