Woman, 62, Fights $1,431 Cable Porn Bill

YONKERS, N.Y. (AP) - A 62-year-old retired schoolteacher is fighting with a cable company over a hefty bill for porn and gangsta rap programming she says she never ordered.

The charges of more than $1,000 appeared on Claudia Lee's February Cablevision bill, shortly after she bundled her cable TV, computer and phone services.

``They are harassing me and trying to make me pay for something I didn't do,'' said Lee, who lives alone.

She said she has been forced to pay $779 to the company and was told to pay $652 more or face having her services cut off.

``Every time I call, somebody tells me something different. They're not on the same page,'' she said Thursday.

Cablevision spokesman Bill Powers said Lee may not have ordered the pay-per-view programming, but someone in her home did. Lee claimed someone pirated her connection. Powers said the company did not find theft of service.

On Friday, however, Cablevision issued a statement saying, ``We are suspending these charges pending a full investigation and we are going to work with our customer to ensure that this matter is appropriately resolved.''

Lee said the only regular visitor to her house is her 81-year-old mother, ``and I don't think she wants to watch porn.''

That happend to me once, too.

I was in the hospital for 4 days in 1997 & while I was there were $2,800 worth of international phone sex charges (during an 8 hr stretch) appeared on my bill. I provided my hospital admittance record & a letter from my landlord proving that I was not on the property when the charges occurred & that I had no roommates. The phone company told me that nobody had tapped the line & insisted I pay the bill.

I was a law clerk in a corporate law firm at that time, so after 2 days of reading up on the issue (with help from my boss) it became clear my being in the hospital wasn't going to win the case. The bottom line, it was my phone number & any use of it was my responsibility. Also, challenging the charges wouldn't stop Bell Atlantic (now Verizon) from making a negative report on my credit. So, I got some help writing up a contract where I accepted financial responsibility for the line but Bell Atlantic had to acknowledge that I could not possibly have made any of the calls.

I still have that damn bill, my hospital records, & my landlord's letter, just in caseI can use them to stick it to Verizon one day.

Okay, I feel better now. But I really feel for this poor woman. I hope she gets justice. And some serious compensation.
