I've never heard of this via any iOS 8 tips and tricks and just discovered it for myself: you can swipe mail notifications on your lock screen to either as Marked Read or Archive. Sorry if I'm late to the party but I think it's a nice feature.

Yes, this was a major part of iOS 8, along with responding to messages from the lock screen.

But I agree, it's definitely a nice feature.
