No, it's only a watch, I see little reason to stretch my budget

I did not stretch my budget and I would never do that for a "nondurable" good (i.e. a good that does not gain value over time). Either I can afford it or I can't, but then I won't buy it.
Since the watch can be configured to be very affordable without sacrificing much functionality (Cellular would be the only one that comes to mind), I would clearly reconsider buying it, if that would still mean blowing the budget.

Ok but I’m guilty. I got the titanium brand new with Apple care. Reason being is I got the series 3 stainless steel used back then for cheap on eBay so having used the three and liking the watch I decided to get the best model. Been happy with the watch so far. Minus the small scratches on the screen but I’ll use Apple care later in 2 yrs or so. And the Milanese loop is great for work attire.

If a normal watch stretches my budget then I’d think I should plan better. Also, I never buy any expensive model of the Apple Watch simply because it’s a throwaway consumer product after a few years, that could be 2-3 years or a bit longer depending on your usage.

I’d go with an exchange program in a heartbeat if apple started one tomorrow but they don’t, and the price for an older Apple Watch is not worth it for me to exchange at an apple store.

I also don’t have the time go through the hassle of selling them outside for a little more.

So base sports model for me with a few additional straps from amazon until the watch stops working. Then will move on to the next model.

I hate to say this, but if you’re ‘stretching your budget’ to buy an Apple Watch, then you can’t afford it. I’m not saying there are not lesser alternatives out there, but they’re definitely cheaper alternatives if you can’t afford the Apple Watch, which is Ok, because Apple products are very expensive in general.

That said, most the Apple Watches accomplish all the same task(s), one could purchase a Series 3 Apple Watch and still have 90% of functionality as the Series 5 would have, so you can still enjoy something, but consider the cheaper model for your ‘budget’.

It's actually cheap considering what you get. Thermally compensated quartz watches are expensive. On top of that you get an excellent smartwatch. It gives me a thrill to think that I've got a tiny UNIX machine running on my wrist. Well worth the price.

Slightly off topic: I did stretch my budget on some of my mechanicals

Although I think the AW is reasonably priced for what it offers, I wouldn't stretch my budget for a gadget that would be completely obsolete in a few years. If AW is too expensive for you, go with the base version, if still too expensive, go for an S3 or second hand S4.

Now if you're talking about a nice mechanical watch that I'll likely keep for the rest of my life that's a different story.
