I just upgraded from iPad (3rd Generation) to an iPad Air 2. I thought Apple switched shipping 10W USB adapters with iPads to 12W USB adapters for the iPad Air last year.

My new iPad Air 2 came with a 10W USB adapter.

Did I receive the wrong one?

I think it was only one generation that came with the 12w ones.

Brian is correct. Only the iPad Air 1 shipped with 12 watt chargers. The current generation is shipping with only 10 watt adapters. You can purchase a 12 watt from Apple.

Went to check my Air 2 confirm this.. and yeah, it does ship with 10 watt. I actually purchased a 12 watt adapter for my 6 Plus when I bought it. So, I've been sharing the 12 watt both with the Air 2 & 6 Plus and haven't bothered to use the 10 watt yet.

I'm surprised that they would ship the 10 watt instead of the 12 watt especially when they are no longer selling the 10 watt seperately anymore...

Yeah, what gives? Why would they even still manufacture the 10 watt one? Unless they have a warehouse full of 10W adapters they're trying to unload, it's silly and inefficient to make two different adapters with very slightly different power ratings.

As far as I know the 10w are compatible with the original iPad Mini and increase charging speed. I wonder if the 12w ones would also be compatible.

Isn't such that all the chargers are compatible with everything? I.E. a 12w charger can charge an 5w iPhone since it will jump down the wattage (or something?) I always figured that 5w, 10w and 12w chargers were interchangeable, they just made your charging times differ (depending on the device, of course)

iPad 4 and 5 (Air) were bundled with the 12W charger, which came out in late 2012.

The iPad 6 (Air 2) is bundled with a 10W charger, and they have also downgraded the Air 1 units they're selling now with a 10W charger, instead of the 12W charger it got when it was the top dog.

Apparently, Apple now feels that the only the massive ~11500 mAh batteries in the 3 and 4 need the higher capacity charger, and not the ~8800 and ~7300 mAh batteries in the Air 1 and 2.

I got a new air for Christmas. Original air, not the 2. I was looking forward to it coming with a 12w charger, but it's a 10w.

That's what I'm thinking. Placed an order order for the 12w last night.

Got the 12w in today, and it charges so much faster. Ridiculously faster than the weak 5w that shipped with my mini. I seriously should have ordered this sooner. Thanks guys.
