Difference between apple and att

Are there any difference between pre-ordering from the two of these places?

How would i get my phone to work if i per-order from apple?

I have a iphone 3G and plan to upgrade it to the iphone 4... if i pre-order from the ATT website, i am guessing that i will get the iphone 4 with the same number, useable with the same contract... while my old iphone goes 'signal-less'... correct?

what about from apple? how will I activate it to my ATT account?

If you order from Apple, you will receive the phone at home and the switch will take place when you hook up to iTunes. I don't know what happens if you order from AT&T.
