Is there (should there be) any difference between buying a movie from itunes store and apple tv?

So far I have bought all my movies through the itunes store. The question only arises because a film I am interested in (Untouchable) says it only has French audio when I look it up in itunes, but when I look it up on ATV it says it has french and english.

Both are the same price and I would have thought itunes and atv are just different interfaces for the same catalogue of content.

If it is relevant I have a UK-based Apple account.

And as a PS, on the iPad I can view purchased movies that are “Not on this device”. Is there a similar function or workaround for iPhone, or do I have to go through all movies one by one to see which are downloaded?

The "Apple TV store" is the iTunes Store. So, any purchase will show up in both. The behavior on the iPad and iPhone are essentially identical.

My point was, the specs of the film I want are not identical, so there is something weird going on.

And, unless I just haven’t found it yet, my iPhone does not have the option to display only those purchased movies which have not been downloaded. This option is available on my iPad.

It's probably just UI quirks - it's the same content. If you are purchasing through the "TV" app, you are still purchasing from iTunes.

All purchases movies should show in the "Library" tab of the "TV" app on iPhone, regardless of download status.

Sometimes the Apple tv app picks the movie details from a linked service (Paramount+, Disney+, etc.), and not from the store. So you see a movie with multiple languages, you buy it, and it’s only in one language. I learned the hard way: in Italy, Apple sells a lot of movies with only the (dubbed) italian soundtrack. As an example, Back to the future is only available in Italian.

The iTunes store, on the other hand, has always the correct data.

Purchasing a movie from either the iTunes Store or Apple TV generally provides the same content. Although they are part of the same ecosystem, there may be slight variations in information or options for specific movies. On your iPhone, you can use the 'TV' app to view purchased movies that are not downloaded by accessing the "Purchased" section in the 'Library'.
