Hi guys, I don’t get the difference between the “lost mode” and the toggle “notify when found”, apart from being able to specify a message and your number when NFC is read on lost mode.

Am I missing something?

plus, on the apple FAQ I’ve found that in “lost mode” if you scan the NFC, you’re able to read the serial number….. but this is possible even if lost mode isn’t enabled!!!!

Notify is a push notification issued when a tag that has been not contacted for a while and is then "seen" again. As the tag moves around, its location is periodically updated. The audience is just you.

Lost is state where you're asking for help, or it has been separated from you for an extended period of time (3 days). It beeps, and helps the person who finds the item connect with the owner of the item.

Thanks! So if I set it in lost mode it will start to chirp.. right? So it has to be avoided if I suspect a theft? (I know.. it isn’t an anti-theft device!)

Yes, as best I understand it from playing around so far.
I tested lost mode this morning, I confirmed it really was in lost mode by NFC with another iPhone, but the airtag itself never chirped???

it only chirps after three days…

Also I think you can only turn on push notification if you use lost mode.

From what I understand it will chirp after three days anyway. The condition is being away from the owner.

Push notifications can be enabled by the dedicated toggle when you’re away from the airtag, “lost mode” is not required

Ah. I guess I haven’t tweeted it while I’m away to turn that toggle on.

What happens if you go away for a while and dont take something with you?
For example i have two sets of keys. When i go on holiday next month one set will stay at home.
I dont want it chirping while I'm gone just because that will be using battery (and it would be annoying others)
Is there a "dont chirp if away" mode you can put it in?
TIA

They'll only chirp if moved. If it's just sitting there, it won't do anything.

How do you know that? It only came out yesterday there is no way you could have tested it? Any documentation behind that?

When moved, any AirTag separated for a period of time from the person who registered it will make a sound to alert those nearby.
